Using Cloudflare Warp to connect to your IPv6 only server

published on

There are some places (such as Scaleway) where you can purchase a server and choose not to have an IPv4 address. What you are left with is an IPv6 address only.

The problem with only having IPv6 is that, whilst it might have saved you money, IPv6 addresses aren't as common as IPv4 and some services don't use them.

For the purposes of this article the main issue is that you cannot connect to them without having an IPv6 address on the system you wish to connect from. Not all ISPs yet are IPv6 capable (some countries are better than others).

One way to resolve this issue is to install Cloudflare Warp (https://cloudflarewarp.com/). When running you will enjoy the benefit of using Cloudflare's IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Your requests will be tunnelled through so that you can connect to IPv6 only systems.

Update: If you try installing Cloudflare Warp, or even some other VPN, and it refuses to give you a IPv6 address it is likely due to either other VPNs installed on your computer or other VPNs that you had installed but have since removed.

The problem is that most VPN software disables IPv6 connectivity to help avoid data leaks. If you install Cloudflare Warp but find you can't connect to IPv6 addresses you may find you need to re-enable IPv6.

To do so you will need to open RegEdit as an administrator and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\

Once there look for an entry on the right called DisabledComponents. If you find it make sure its value is set to 0 (zero). You may need to reboot your computer for this change to take effect.
